While a photo can capture a moment, the practice is something that unfolds over many years with peaks, valleys, and long periods of plateau. Each of the stages of practice is equally important to getting settled in the spiritual journey. Sometimes we want to constantly reach for success, however, there is wisdom to be learned in failure as well. When things feel the same every day, it can be easy to feel bored, however, integration happens best in periods of stability. No matter where you are on your practice journey, remember this the most important thing is consistency. Keep getting on the mat as often as you can even if it’s only for five minutes. Slowly over many years of practice the deeper dimension of yoga will open in your heart, mind and soul.

Guess how long?

I can still hear his voice, see his gaze, feel his presence each time I step on the mat. Now that my teacher is gone I have to find the discipline within. But he and his grandfather will always be my teachers.

If you guessed one minute, then you’re right. I started holding Uttplutih for one minute in my daily practice because it helps me maintain strength and focus. It is traditionally said that holding any asana for one minute is the test of sthira (strength) sukha (comfort/grace/sweetness) in that asana.

I’m not sure which was harder, the pose or the smile for the full minute 🤪

Work Marichasana C with a combination of strength and flexibility.

Bend the knee to close the hip joint and keep the torso snuggled in close to the thigh. Then fold the torso around the outside of the thigh, utilizing the lateral stretching action of the side body. Extend the arm that wraps around the shin bone and internally rotate the shoulder so that the elbow glides into position. Bind the hands, stabilize the pelvis, ground through the extended leg and breathe deeply to find the inner work of the asana.

What’s out of sight is often out of mind. One of the most difficult alignment pointers in Purvottanasana involves keeping the lower belly drawn in as the hips lift up and the head drops back. In order to support the elongation of the spine, draw the navel in and expand the chest with each inhalation.

To send the hips forward, avoid squeezing the butt and pushing the lower belly out. Instead, rotate the thighbones slightly inward, activate the quadriceps and engage the back muscles.

To support the neck as it drops back internally, rotate the shoulders and allow the trapezius muscle to slightly elevate.

This posture is important for building stamina, strength and flexibility.
