Try these drills to improve the strength and flexibility needed to get the leg behind the head.

Step one: use a seated pigeon to hold the shin bone closer to the chest. Stabilize the core and then slide the foot behind the head, getting the feeling of how to articulate that range of motion. This drill is primarily activated and controlled with the strength of the arms, the torso and the hips.

Step two: build strength and mobility and the dynamic range of motion by only using the leg to facilitate external hip rotation. Roll through the hip joint and bring the foot as close to the ear as possible from a seated position. When you reach the end range of motion without your hands, hold it there for a few breath, so you can really strengthen the external hip rotator.

Step three: now actually try to put the leg behind the head. The most important action is sliding the shoulder around the calf muscle and the calf muscle down behind the shoulder. Once that positioning is in place, stabilize the torso and push up with the head. This will create strength to support the external hip rotation. Finally, engaged the external hip rotators and find the support for the hip from within the hip.

Have you ever felt like yoga alone was not enough to keep your body supported? Maybe you love the practice but struggle with injuries, hypermobility, or the physical demands of teaching.

On this episode of the Yoga Inspiration Podcast, we have a conversation with Ashtanga teacher @wadeoakley about the balance between yoga, strength training, and long term sustainability on the path.

Wade shares how a shoulder injury first led him to yoga, and how his journey quickly brought him to India to study with Sharath Jois. From there, the conversation opens into what it means to practice with a beginner’s mind, how injuries and rehabilitation shaped his path, and the surprising ways that weight training and mobility work can actually support a deeper commitment to yoga.

For so long, the yoga world carried the idea that yoga is all you need. Yet both Wade and Kino share from experience that longevity in practice often requires more. Physical therapy after injuries, strength training for stability, and other tools can protect the body so yoga continues to unfold as a lifelong journey.

A supported practice is not about perfection. It is about finding balance that allows you to keep showing up to breathe, to move, to study, and to grow.

When the sun shines in Denmark, soak it up. And that is what I am doing today to celebrate my birthday—unplug, relax, press pause and stand in the sun.

The second photo is not an old Fourth of July picture, it’s a Danish thing to put a bunch of country flags out for your birthday party. I told them we should do the Danish but here we are looking like it’s a US Independence Party.
