When I first began exploring deeper backbends, I learned very quickly that progress does not come from pushing harder. It comes from learning how to prepare the body intelligently, breathe steadily, and stay present through each stage of the process.

Backbends are built through consistency, patience, and steadiness. In the Ashtanga tradition, they ask us to balance effort with surrender, strength with sensitivity. The posture cannot be forced open. It must be received through awareness, repetition, and trust in the process itself.

In this sequence from Advanced Yoga Drills on @omstarsoffical, we work progressively toward Eka Pāda Ūrdhva Dhanurāsana through foundational strength, spinal integration, and conscious repetition. Each variation prepares the body for the next.

The posture reveals its intelligence over time. Practice becomes sustainable when we learn to listen instead of force. What develops is not only flexibility in the body, but steadiness in the mind and a deeper relationship to breath, attention, and presence.

You don’t need to be a professional athlete, dance

You don’t need to be a professional athlete, dancer, or cheerleader to improve your flexibility or feel inspired to step onto your mat. No matter where you are in your practice, if the splits call to you, you can begin working toward them today. Yoga is not about already being flexible enough to start. It is about building a relationship with your body through patience, consistency, and curiosity.

Try this drill to support your journey toward the splits. Working with resistance and active range of motion can help your body experience more safety and stability in challenging postures. Instead of forcing flexibility, this approach teaches the nervous system that the shape is stable, supported, and accessible. Often the body opens not through through trust.

Make no mistake, working on the splits can be deeply challenging and, at times, frustrating. Many of us repeat the same movements for years without seeing meaningful change. Sometimes effort alone is not enough. Shifting the technique, approaching the posture from a different angle, and thinking outside the box can make all the difference. Strength and flexibility are not opposites. When they work together, the body often finds new pathways that were hidden before.

We are not separate from the world. We are not sep

We are not separate from the world. We are not separate from each other. Beneath the appearance of division, life moves through all beings as one interconnected field of existence. Every thought, every action, every word ripples outward in ways we may never fully see or understand.

Yoga reminds us that the illusion of separateness is one of the deepest roots of suffering. When we believe ourselves isolated, we move through life trying to prove, defend, compete, and protect. But beneath all of that striving lives a quieter truth. We are not here merely to accumulate achievements or construct identities. We are here to participate in the unfolding of life itself. We do not not need us to become someone else. Instead we can learn to become more deeply aligned with what is already true within us.

Sometimes the greatest offering we can make is the quality of energy we bring into a room, into a conversation, into our relationships, and into our own hearts. A steady presence. A kind word. A compassionate action. A willingness to remain open in a world that often encourages fear and division.
