The Inner Teachings of Krishnamacharya with Sri Shubha

The name T. Krishnamacharya is often spoken with reverence. Called the father of modern yoga, his influence reaches through the Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Viniyoga traditions, and continues to ripple through nearly every yoga class taught today. But behind the stories of discipline and scholarship was a father and a household where yoga was lived day by day.

In a recent conversation on the Yoga Inspiration Podcast, we welcomed Sri Shubha TKV Desikachar, Krishnamacharya’s daughter, who shared her own memories of growing up in such an extraordinary home. For her, yoga was never something separate or scheduled, it was part of the air she breathed. She recalls being asked to demonstrate a posture for her father, Paschimattanasana, before heading back to play. In her words, yoga was like “having coffee or taking a bath… it was just our lifestyle.”

Through these simple recollections shines the essence of Krishnamacharya’s teaching: yoga as lived experience, not performance. His instruction adapted fluidly to the individual before him, and his presence carried both discipline and compassion. Sri Shubha also points to the quiet but profound influence of her mother, reminding us that yoga is carried not only through teachers on a platform, but through the daily rhythms of family, home, and relationship.

These stories are not just memories; they are living threads in a lineage that continues to guide us. Listening to Sri Shubha reflect on her father is a reminder that yoga reaches far beyond postures, into devotion, presence, and the way we live our lives.

This September, we are honored to invite Sri Shubha to teach a special Omstars Live series: The Inner Teachings of Krishnamacharya. Streaming every Saturday in September, the course will explore Yoganjalisaram, a collection of 32 verses composed by Krishnamacharya himself. Each class will weave chanting, philosophical reflection, and personal insight from one of the closest voices to this tradition.

Whether you are a student curious about yoga’s roots, a teacher seeking depth, or a practitioner longing to connect with lineage, this is a rare opportunity to sit with Sri Shubha and experience the living wisdom of her father’s teaching.
