When we enter deeply into an āsana, something almost miraculous begins to unfold. For a few moments the outer world recedes, not because it has vanished, but because our attention gathers inward with a rare precision.

The breath becomes the quiet axis around which experience turns. Each inhalation expands the inner space of awareness, and each exhalation softens the subtle tensions that bind the mind to distraction. The body, which in ordinary life is often treated as an object to shape, judge, or display, becomes instead a living field of sensation. We feel the slow intelligence of the spine extending, the quiet negotiations of the hips, the subtle adjustments of the shoulders and ribs. Every movement becomes an act of listening.

Each time we step onto the mat, we are not only stretching the body or calming the mind. We are rehearsing the possibility of steadiness in the midst of movement, of peace in the midst of turmoil. The stillness we discover within ourselves becomes the foundation from which we return to the world, carrying a small but real offering of stability into an unstable time.

We withdraw the senses inward so that we may return to the world more fully and more wholly. When the inner world has been touched by stillness, our actions begin to arise from a different place. We cultivate silence within ourselves so that our words may carry truth rather than agitation. We practice steadiness in the body so that our presence in the world may embody peace rather than reaction.

Beautiful Bali 🌺 I can hardly believe that the first time I visited this island was nearly twenty years ago. So much has changed, and yet so much has remained the same, both within myself and here on the island.

It feels like a blessing to be here for the next two weeks, immersed in sharing the practice with everyone who will join. Together we will intentionally create space for deep practice, entering a kind of bubble where introspection becomes possible and where transformation can quietly unfold.

With everything happening in the world right now, I am deeply aware of what a privilege it is simply to be safe and to have the opportunity to practice and teach yoga. It is not something I take for granted. Even if it may seem a little naive, I still believe that when we practice sincerely, we participate in something larger than ourselves. Through small acts of presence, discipline, and compassion, yoga gives us a way to slowly, patiently help change the world.

Primary Series is not the beginning because it is

Primary Series is not the beginning because it is easy. It is the beginning because it is foundational. Before a practitioner can hold greater currents of prāṇa, before subtle perception stabilizes, before meditation deepens, something in the organism must be reorganized. Primary Series is that reorganization.

The traditional name Yoga Cikitsā reveals the intention encoded within the sequence itself. Cikitsā is usually translated as “therapy,” “treatment,” or “healing.” Its root is often traced to cit — consciousness, awareness, perception — combined with an intensifying and active formation implying attentive care, wise correction, and conscious restoration. Cikitsā is not passive healing.

Primary Series does not merely stretch muscles. It treats misalignment in structure, breath, nervous system, and even patterns of perception. It is applied intelligence and the conscious application of yoga to restore integration where fragmentation exists.
