Kindness. I believe in kindness, patient, unrelenting, even illogical. If given the choice, I will do everything in my power to turn towards kindness, over and over again, for my own interests, yes, but also for the benefit of others.

Even if rejected or misunderstood, never once have I regretted being kind. Instead, the moments where I lashed out, acted from anger, judged harshly, or held onto grudges are the ones that I regret. And, yes, I’ve done all that and still do. None of us always succeed in living up to our highest standards all the time, no matter how hard we try.

Yoga is the effort we put in, not the demand of absolute or immediate perfection. We are not expected to do every pose perfectly, not the first time and maybe not ever. But I believe we are meant to learn to be kind to ourselves somewhere along the way of the practice journey.

It is said that the quality of a yogi’s mind is sattva, from sat (being, truth) and the suffix -tva (the state of), meaning the very essence of true being, which manifests as clarity, harmony, and kindness in thought, word, and deed. From kindness flows a river of love and peace, but only if we follow its twisting, winding course. These are hard choices because so often kindness requires going against instinct, old hurt, and neural patterning.

Strength is not just some lift up. Strength means that even though everything screams to build walls and protect, I will remain soft, extend a hand, and keep my heart open. And when the hand is bitten, my heart is hurt, and the drums of hate, anger, and resentment start rattling, I will not answer their call. When depression threatens to pull me under and asks me to direct all the negativity toward myself and implode, and I feel I can no longer stand on my own, I will ask for help and for Grace to guide me back to the path.

Over and over, stumbling, tripping, failing, falling, no matter how many times, always learning, I will pick myself back up again and search out the clues that lead back to the path of kindness. This is a big part of what yoga means to me.

I got on my mat today feeling tired and unmotivated, but I showed up anyway. Some days I am honestly just grateful I made it through. There is no perfect, there is only practice.

Some days āsana feels like a lifeline. Other days it feels heavy, clumsy, even a struggle. And then there are moments when practice becomes something mysterious and filled with grace, offering hope right when I need it most.

If I need humility, I stumble. If I need to slow down, the body feels heavy. If I need to be lifted up, small sparks of curiosity open doors to inner discovery. If I need to listen, a still small voice calls me to tune into the frequency of Grace.

Patañjali writes that the state of yoga is reached through a balance of practice and non-attachment, abhyāsa-vairāgyābhyāṁ tan-nirodhaḥ (Yoga Sūtra I.12). We have to learn how to live this teaching in real time on the mat (and then maybe it also shows up off the mat!). Some days through struggle, some days through surrender, always persistent and patient.

This is the gift of practice. Not always easy, not always beautiful, but always real.

As teachers, we rely on the trust of students to share the practice. When that bond is manipulated or abused—even by one teacher—it brings shame on us all. The actions of Taylor Hunt have poisoned Ashtanga yoga and broken the sacredness of the Mysore practice space. To the students who have been harmed: your pain, your voices, and your courage must remain at the heart of our attention. There is deep damage that must be healed, both in our community and in each of the survivors of his actions. This is no small task, and it will take time, compassion, and accountability.

I first learned of Taylor’s abusive pattern of initiating sexual relationships with students within the past ten days. Prior to that, no one had shared such accounts with me. I had heard whispers of hard adjustments and knew of students who left his community on uncertain terms. Two years ago, I was approached with a story of an affair between Taylor and a colleague, a fellow authorized teacher. Because she was not his student, I mistakenly considered it outside my concern. At the time I did contact Taylor and told him that if there was inappropriate behavior, he should come clean. I left it there. In hindsight, I should have asked deeper questions. I regret not investigating further, and I see now that perhaps I would have understood sooner the scale of harm that is only now being revealed. Hindsight cannot change the present. What matters now is that we acknowledge the harm clearly and without excuses.

Since these stories have come forward, I and others in the community have been:

-Sitting with and listening to the survivors’ stories.

-Amplifying their voices and showing our support.

-Meeting with colleagues to discuss a unified statement that centers the victims while repudiating Taylor’s actions.

-Working to establish a path forward that safeguards the lineage, the practice, and the safety of students.

As a survivor of sexual assault by a yoga teacher myself, I know the pain and betrayal of being failed by the very systems of power that should have offered protection. That makes me regret even more that it took me this long to see clearly. I am listening now.

The privilege of teaching here
is not ours to claim,
but granted by the students who walk this path.
It must never be taken for granted,
never abused — only honored with humility.

In this space of self-paced devotion,
each breath becomes a prayer,
each practice a transformation.

The Mysore room is not just where we practice.
It is where the lineage lives.
And I am humbled and grateful each time I teach.
