The world is burning.

Sometimes, quite literally—flames devour forests, cities, entire ecosystems. But more often, the fire rages in subtler forms: heartbreak, division, grief, injustice. From the deeply personal to the undeniably global, we feel the heat. We carry it in our breath, in the ache behind our eyes, in the quiet fatigue that settles into the bones.

As yoga practitioners, we are not exempt. We are not untouched. We live in this world too—with its beauty and its brokenness.

So we ask:

How do we respond?

How do we rise—not in anger alone, but in clarity and compassion?

How do we stand—firm in our truth, yet soft enough to stay open?

How do we remain grounded in the ancient teachings, while still showing up fully for the urgent needs of now?

These are not new questions. The great paths of yoga were born in times of war, exile, collapse.

Yoga does not ask us to look away from suffering.

It does not teach denial, nor does it promise numbness.

It teaches us to see—to truly see—and then, to remain.

To stay.
To breathe.
To bear witness.
To act with presence, not panic.

The Sanskrit word kṣānti (क्षान्ति) is often translated as “patience,” but it holds more. It is the forbearance that burns steady in the face of chaos. It is the quiet courage that does not turn away. Kṣānti is not passivity. It is not apathy dressed in spiritual clothes.

It is resilience born of deep understanding.

Kṣānti is the flame that does not flicker when the winds of the world blow hard.

It is not retreat—it is the light we carry into the darkness.And so we return to the mat, not to escape, but to remember.

To cultivate steadiness in a world that sways.
To learn again how to respond—not with fear, but with love that acts.

Yoga is never only about the pose.

It’s about the breath that carries us in, and the awareness that guides us out. It’s about how we move—not just what we do. It’s about the space between the shapes, the honesty in our effort, the quiet in our heart. The practice is not a performance. It’s a presence.

If we chase the outer form at the expense of our inner stillness, we may find ourselves far from yoga, even if the posture looks perfect. Strength in yoga is not brute force; it is refined attention, a conscious meeting of body, breath, and mind.

Sometimes, the deepest practice is not in holding the fullest expression of a pose, but in releasing the need to. In softening into sensation. In listening to what the body whispers instead of what the ego demands. In choosing steadiness over strain, breath over ambition, presence over posture.

Yoga begins where the effort to conquer ends. When we let go of the struggle, the real shape of the spirit begins to emerge. This is where the subtle body awakens. This is where sattva—that clear, luminous state of peace—begins to flow.

This is where yoga lives, on the mat, yes, and always in the soul.

Bharadvājāsana is a seated spinal twist named after the ancient sage Bharadvāja, one of the legendary ṛṣis (seers) of the Vedas. His name is often interpreted as “the bearer of the banner,” symbolizing one who upholds and carries forward the light of wisdom and lineage.

This pose honors the inner qualities of the sage—wisdom, discipline, devotion, and the sacred power of transmission passed from teacher to student.

To explore alignment in Bharadvājāsana:

Begin by anchoring the twist through the base—root the hips and press through the heel of the hand. Once you’ve established a steady foundation, initiate a gentle lateral shift to bring the torso over to the side. From there, lift the rib cage and spiral around the spine’s central axis to deepen the twist. Let the foot of the half-lotus leg ground you further, stabilizing the pelvis as the twist unfolds from within.

Try these drills to improve your strength and flex

Try these drills to improve your strength and flexibility in Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana.

Use a chair to square the pelvis, and prevent one hip from hiking up and the spine from twisting. Place the thigh on the seat of the chair and the foot on the back rest of the chair. Then, engage the back muscles and lift the rib cage up out of the pelvis and articulate the spinal extension. Use external rotation to reach the arms over the top of the head towards the foot.

use a strap too work strength and flexibility. Holding onto the strap press back with the leg and pull with the arms. Repeat that a few times and then settled into the most deep uncomfortable variation that works for you. Practice engaging the legs and grounding through the hips to create more foundational strength.

Finally, put it all together and try without any props. Build good muscle memory with the previous drills and then apply all of the technique in practice. If you’re not ready to try without the props, don’t force it.

Find a mix of strength and flexibility in the hips, shoulder and spine to stabilize your backbend.

Some days, the practice feels like flying. Other days, it feels like falling — again and again. But vīrya is what carries you through both. It’s not about force or perfection. It’s about the strength to stay.

The Sanskrit word vīrya comes from the root vīra, meaning hero, warrior, courageous one. In the ancient texts, it doesn’t simply refer to physical strength — it speaks of the deep moral and spiritual valor that arises when the soul chooses the path of truth, even when it’s hard.

It’s the strength to rise when it’s easier to quit.

To breathe through doubt.

To soften in the face of resistance.

To return, even when everything in you says: not today.

Vīrya is courageous effort — not a battle to win, but a devotion to keep walking, one step, one breath at a time. It’s the fire of commitment that says: I am here. I will try again.

What makes vīrya so powerful is that it’s not cold or rigid. It’s not driven by ego or dominance. It’s warmed by faith and lit by purpose. In yoga, this looks like waking up before dawn not to punish the body, but to nourish the soul. This is the discipline of devotion.

This is the heart of practice.

The power of showing up — with love, with honesty, with everything you’ve got.

There’s a kind of strength in tuning out the noise — the gossip, the judgment, the projections of others. In a world that rewards loud opinions and quick reactions, choosing to stay grounded in your truth can feel radical.

I’ve learned (and am still learning) that not everything needs a response. Not every rumor deserves our energy. Not every critic has earned our attention. Sometimes the most yogic thing we can do is take a breath, stay close to our inner peace, and simply… not engage.

Yoga teaches us to return again and again to what’s real — the breath, the body, the stillness inside. That quiet place is where clarity lives. It’s where the storms of the world can’t touch us.
