Let’s just say that this confirms beyond any doubt that not everything vegan is healthy. Tim got this for me for fun when I told him I used to love cotton candy as a kid. Sadly, I couldn’t finish it and I just couldn’t handle all the fake sugar. But we did have some fun with it so o hope it was worth it.

Which option is for you?

Working backbends doesn’t need to be stressful or painful. Find the way to work that best supports the body.

1. Try from hero’s pose. Lift the upper back and internally rotate the shoulders to interlace the fingers behind the back. Inhale to lengthen the spine and exhale to engage the muscles of the back and support the spinal extension.

2. Try from a kneeling position. Inhale and engage the legs rooting down through the inner edges of the quadriceps. Activate the muscles of the pelvic floor and elongate the spine. Left the rib cage away from the hips, expand the chest, internally rotate the shoulders and interlace the fingers just behind the sacrum. Engage muscles of the back to support the spinal extension. Avoid creating the neck back.

3. Reach the hands towards the heels. Repeating the same alignment instructions as option number to reach the arms back and sync the heels of the hands onto the heels of the feet. Be careful not to dump weight down into the body and keep lengthening the spine and moving the ribs away from the hips. When it feels comfortable in this option it’s safe to drop the neck back and gaze at the nose tip.

4. Try with a chair. Start off seated on the chair. Slide the hips forward towards the front of the seat of the chair. Align the seat and the knees hips with a part. Inhale to lift the rib cage away from the pelvic floor exhale reach the hands back and hold onto the seat of the chair. Internally rotate the shoulders and lengthen the spine. Engage the back muscles to support the spinal extension.

5. Use a chair to support the neck. Start off seated on a chair and slide down the seat of the chair until both knees are resting on the ground in a kneeling position and the feet are slightly underneath the seat of the chair. Then lengthen the spine and rest the head on the seat of the chair. Internally rotate the shoulders and maintain a good activation through the muscles that support the spine. Reach the hands down towards the feet and allow a little weight to pour into the heels. This is a great option if you have flexibility in your spine but trouble bending the knees more than ninety degrees.

You might think I was born flexible but I wasn’t. When I first started yoga my back, especially my upper back, just would not bend. It was stiff, like a table. I started working on flexibility in all sorts of different ways, many of which were non-conventional and got me called a bad ashtangi. That’s ok, I’ve never been one to follow all the rules. And besides, when I could feel that my upper back was opening it was confirmation enough. From wherever you are, if you start practicing you can find more flexibility. It’s not a competition. It’s a journey, like a hike through a beautiful forest. It’s not about getting it all done. It’s about the experience and the learning that happens along the way.

Which version is for you?

Splits and backbends are closely tied together and they’re both very advanced flexibility movements that take time to develop. Don’t rush and find the way to work with respect for your body.

1. Try lifting one leg and alternating from Simple Bridge
2. Start from the floor and lift up into Viparita Dandasana and then lift one leg and alternate.
3. Try lifting one left from Urdhva Dhanurasana after straighten the legs.
4. The traditional Ashtanga Yoga Third Series vinyasa entry into Eka Pada Viparita Dandasana requires strength, flexibility and lots of practice.
