The first time I did a led second series class was in NYC with Pattabhi Jois. I had just come back to the US from practicing in the Lakshmipuram shala in India that only held 12 students at a time. Nervously asking my teacher if I could join, when he replied with “yes, you come” I was instantly filled with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. Somehow I survived, and maybe even enjoyed that class.

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to practice in many led second series classes with both Pattabhi Jois and SharathJi, on tour and also in Mysore. So many good memories! Each class taught me something and presented its own challenges. Now that they’re both gone, we are doing what we can to keep the tradition alive with the help of amazingly committed students and colleagues. You’ll have to ask all who practiced how they felt. As for me, I can only hope I did my teachers’ justice in holding the space of the practice.

We intend to offer this powerful class again when we have a solid group of second series practitioners in the next Mysore season. We made the offering available online for those who couldn’t attend in person. Would you like to join the next led second series class in person or online?

Next year’s Mysore season will be in January and June with @kinoyoga and @timfeldmannyoga here in Miami @miamilifecenter Come for a week, two weeks, the whole month, for practice only or for afternoon programs as well.

Ashtanga Yoga is a lifelong commitment. The practice has taught us patience, humility, and dedication. It’s not just about achieving the poses but about continual inner transformation. Each practice is a conversation between breath, body, and mind, an honest reflection, and an act of devotion to the lineage. Yoga is a sacred thread that connects us deeply, beyond the physical practice.

This class gave us Gokulam shala vibes. Any more students and we’d have to add a batch or let people practice in the hallways and bathrooms. Who feels us on this?

Thank you to our teachers, without their Grace we would not be here today. Thank you to every single practitioner for showing up with heart and soul. The season keeps unfolding, and the journey continues to transform us all.

Why I’m Still Practicing Ashtanga Yoga — More than 25 Years Later

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of posts about why people are quitting Ashtanga Yoga. I understand. This practice is intense. It demands everything from you — and sometimes more than you’re ready to give.

But for me, the journey began when the struggle showed up — not when it was avoided.

Ashtanga Yoga has taught me discipline, but not dogma. There’s space for softness inside the structure, and there’s always room to evolve. This practice is a mirror, not a performance. What it reflects back has never been about how my body looks — it’s about how willing I am to see myself, every day.

Yes, I’ve been injured — in practice, and in teaching. But injury didn’t mean the practice failed me. It meant I had to listen. I had to learn. The practice didn’t break me — it taught me how to heal.

I stay because I believe in lineage — not as hierarchy, but as a sacred thread. It links breath to breath, teacher to student, memory to devotion. When the teacher is gone, the practice becomes the prayer that keeps them alive.

What keeps me here?
The breath that expands.
The sweat that purifies.
The silence that clarifies.
The posture that humbles.
The surrender that opens the heart.

This isn’t about flexibility or form. It’s about returning home.

After more than 25 years, I’m still practicing because this path continues to transform me. Not into someone “better,” but into someone more honest. More grounded. More alive.

If you’ve left the practice — I honor your reasons. There’s no one right way. But if you ever want to return, know that this breath, this mat, this tradition is still here. Quiet. Waiting. Ready. Without judgment.

And in the meanwhile, I’ll be here teaching and practicing and I’d love to see you on the mat!

If you feel that your Bakasana cannot take flight,

If you feel that your Bakasana cannot take flight, it might be because it’s too flat. When the shinbones point too much out to the side and the elbows bend deeply, sometimes the balance and lift happens with friction instead of strength.

Instead, try this. Round the back to activate the strength of the front body. Stabilize the shoulders by recruiting the muscles of the rotator cuff and the shoulder girdle. Situate the knees as close to the armpits as possible. Then start to send the weight forward into the stable foundation of the weight-bearing structure of the upper body. Use the core to lift the hips and tuck the ribs in.

Practicing with good technique means that your Bakasana will soon take flight ⚡️
