Here’s how not to do your plank.

Avoid dropping into the joints, softening the core, hiking the butt back and up, and generally just trying to survive without a clearer sense of alignment. This makes the pose feel really heavy and can compromise the integrity of your practice.

Instead, integrate the work of plank with the core of the body by activating the muscles of the legs, the lower abdominals, the lower ribs, and the shoulder girdle. Orient your awareness towards the center line and work with integrity. Over time you will get stronger.

A fresh coconut, sunshine, blue skies. What more could anyone really ask for? Don’t worry, it’s not a plastic straw. It’s an organic straw made of plant materials that will biodegrade.

What we focus on determines not only what direction the course of our life will take, but how we feel moment to moment. While external circumstances are often out of our control, we always have power to craft the story we tell about what has happened. In any given situation there are facts, opinions and reactions to both. When the line gets blurry between fact, opinion and reaction, we get lost is a sea of delusion.

Yoga is built on the premise that we can train the mind to see clearly and differentiate between what is truly factual and what is just opinion and thereby choose our actions consciously. Otherwise the pattern of reaction will just pull us into old familiar cycles of suffering.

Yoga believes in the potential of liberation, but it isn’t easy. We each have to work for it through what feels good and what doesn’t feel so good.

Everything is connected. Nothing is separate.

Sometimes we want to do an impressive, looking arm balance, but we aren’t willing to put in the fundamental work in our daily practice. When we focus on a particular result without understanding the foundation, our efforts often fail and we feel incomplete. In yoga and in life, how we start something in the beginning creates the structure for how it will end.

Start each day and start each practice off with an attitude of non-attachment to the results. This will allow your mind and your heart to be free to explore all of the different facets of possibility. Yoga is a tool that helps liberate the mind. How we practice is much more important than what physical asanas we do. So, when my teacher said practice properly, what he meant, was keep your heart and spirit aligned with the deeper dimension of yoga.

@timfeldmannyoga always makes me laugh. We went into the yoga room to film a video and he grabbed these gloves and started making jokes. I can’t take him anywhere 🤣 This is a joke, please don’t think we or any Ashtangis teach like this.
