When I first started practicing, people told me I

When I first started practicing, people told me I would never lift up. They said my thighs were too thick and my arms too small. I was never a dancer, a gymnast, a cheerleader, never an athlete of any kind. It was too late to start. I should just give up and accept my limitations. But I kept trying. Not with blind faith. My teachers believed in me and encouraged me, and I drew from their strength. I learned technique and began to apply new perspectives to my practice. Along the way, after more failed attempts than I could possibly count, I managed my first handstand. Years later, I’m still practicing.

Handstands don’t really matter. They’re fun and I love them. But what really matters is what we learn along the way. Strength and steadiness of mind, persistence and perseverance in the face of doubt and disbelief. If a thousand people are against us, but in our heart we remain steadfast and true, holding on to the center, then the pose has taught us well. But if we perform poses to win approval, either from ourselves or from some elite group, then what good is that?

There are people right now whispering doubt in your ear. Don’t believe them. And there are people guarding these practices as though they were meant to be hidden away, kept for a chosen few. They were never meant to be hidden. If you feel it in your heart, that feeling is reason enough to reach for it. The doubt outside you and the walls others build are the same test in the end, and you meet them the same way: hold on to your center. Believe in yourself and never give up, whether it’s a handstand or something else in your life.

What if your home could become the shala?

This October, we are opening a live, month-long Mysore room for just 30 students. Across four weeks, you will practice with myself and @timfeldmannyoga in real time over Zoom while we watch, guide, and offer the individual cues that make Mysore practice so personal.

Before we begin, we will review your practice history, current edge, injuries, and the postures you are working on. So when you step onto your mat for the first session, we will already know where you are and how to support you.

The Home Shala includes eight live Mysore mornings, along with prāṇāyāma, meditation, conference, and Q&A. This is a complete traditional container for practitioners with an established self-practice, whether you are working in Primary, Intermediate, or Advanced Series.

Your handstand doesn’t need fixing. It needs understanding.

One of the most common habits in handstand practice is the “banana” shape. The good news? It’s not about forcing yourself straighter. It’s about learning how to organize the body.

Press into the shoulders. Draw the tailbone under. Activate the core. Little by little, the line begins to reveal itself.

These small refinements are what transform your practice over time. Consistent drills, thoughtful repetition, and patient attention build the strength and awareness that make handstand feel lighter, steadier, and more integrated.
