Your handstand doesn’t need fixing. It needs understanding.

One of the most common habits in handstand practice is the “banana” shape. The good news? It’s not about forcing yourself straighter. It’s about learning how to organize the body.

Press into the shoulders. Draw the tailbone under. Activate the core. Little by little, the line begins to reveal itself.

These small refinements are what transform your practice over time. Consistent drills, thoughtful repetition, and patient attention build the strength and awareness that make handstand feel lighter, steadier, and more integrated.

Perspective changes everything because we do not encounter the world without interpretation. We see through the accumulated lenses of memory, experience, emotion, expectation, attachment, fear, loyalty, identity, and desire. Some of these influences are visible enough that we can recognize them and consciously account for them, while others remain hidden beneath the surface of awareness, shaping what we believe before we have even realized that an interpretation has taken place.

We may imagine that we are simply seeing reality as it is, when we are also seeing what we have been conditioned to expect, what we have been encouraged to believe, what we fear might be true, or what we need to be true in order to preserve a particular understanding of ourselves, another person, or the world around us.

The power of perception is not found in seeing quickly or judging with absolute certainty. It develops through the willingness to remain present within complexity long enough for the distortions of fear, attachment, memory, and conditioning to become visible. As discernment deepens, we begin to recognize the difference between what we know, what we have been told, what we have assumed, what we feel, and what remains uncertain. These distinctions create space within the mind, and within that space there is the possibility of greater wisdom.

Handstand is not just a pose you kick up into and hope to hold.

It is a practice of learning how the whole body works together. Forward folds teach the pathway in. Strong shoulders give you the foundation to stabilize. The hips teach you how to lift, float, and move with control.

When these pieces start to connect, handstand becomes less about throwing yourself upside down and more about understanding the movement from the inside out.

You are never not practicing.

Yoga is not only what happens when you roll out your mat, move through the sequence, or place your attention on breath, body, and mind. That is the laboratory. That is where we rehearse the inner work. But the real practice continues in the moments when life does not feel steady, when we are triggered, when we are confused, when things fall apart, when we fail, when we lose clarity, and when we have to begin again.

This is where Tristhāna becomes more than a method of practice. As @timfeldmannyoga and I explore in this episode, breath becomes the place we return when the mind scatters. Posture becomes the way we remember how to stand with dignity in the middle of difficulty. Gaze becomes discernment, the willingness to look again, to see more clearly, and to choose where our attention will dwell.

The practice teaches us how to come back. Not once, but again and again. To the breath. To the body. To awareness. To the quiet place within that can remain present even when the surface of life is moving.
