Try these block drills to help open the shoulders

Try these block drills to help open the shoulders and the spine for Kapotasana. Everyone seemed to like the strap drills I posted last week, what do you think about these block drills?

Use the block to support the upper back and work progressively. First stack two blocks and place them behind the shoulder blades. Hold a strap to keep the shoulders active in the external rotation pattern. Sink the hips and reach the arms overhead. If this worked well, turn the top block to a higher position and repeat. Increase the demand on the shoulders by dropping the strap, bending the elbows and holding onto the block.

Place the block under the sacrum and extend the legs. Wait for the hips to open. Then, fold the legs around the block and settle the knees on the ground. Reach the hands over the head, press the hips forward and gently walk toward the feet. Use the block between the feet to prevent the feet from sliding together as you deepen the grip.

We do not step onto the mat in pursuit of perfecti

We do not step onto the mat in pursuit of perfection. We come to practice so we may learn—and learning, by its nature, requires that we fail, sometimes over and over again. As students, this is humbling. As teachers, the path often feels even steeper, the stakes somehow higher. But the journey remains the same: to return, again and again, with sincerity.

Over the years, I’ve encountered criticism—sometimes subtle, sometimes sharp. I’ve been judged for what I wear (or don’t), for the color of my hair, the sound of my voice, my makeup, my smile, my spirit. Some of it came straight to my face. Much of it hid behind the veil of online anonymity. And some filtered through in whispers, just out of reach but still stinging.

Like many of you, I’ve wandered, grasped, stumbled, searched. I haven’t “arrived” anywhere. There is no final destination in this practice—only the next breath, the next step, the next layer to soften into. If there is anything enduring in me, it’s not perfection, but persistence. I kept showing up. And I did so in the presence of teachers who saw something deep and true in me, and who tended to those seeds—of peace, of love, of insight—with great care.

Now, in their absence, it feels like both an honor and a responsibility to pass on whatever nourishment I’ve received to those who choose to practice with me.

Who I am today—as a human being, as a practitioner, and as a teacher—is the result of years of effort, of listening, of failing, and of learning. If you see peace in my eyes, know that it arose through chaos. If you hear wisdom in my words, know it was born of confusion. If you feel love in my presence, understand that I had to remember the way back to my own heart.

Yoga, in the end, is not about becoming someone else. It’s about uncovering who we’ve always been—through the fire, the tears, the laughter, and the stillness.

Krounchasana is a balance between strength and fle

Krounchasana is a balance between strength and flexibility.

Once the internal rotation of the hips is deep enough to ground the pelvis, then use the core muscles to lift the spine up along the central axis. Avoid overly rounding and dumping weight into the lower back.

Working the prepare position very consciously helps strengthen the back and keeps the spine elongated even as you fold forward. While it may be tempting to drop the head close to the leg, keep lifting the leg towards the head to work both directions.

Align the knee of the lifted leg with the center of the chest, draw the elbows down, and reach the chin towards the shin. Look up towards the toes.

Note that there are many adaptations and variations of this pose. Not everyone can internally rotate the hip joint so deeply or bend the knee fully. Find the option that works best for you to do the inner work of the practice.

Many of us come to yoga seeking relief. Relief fro

Many of us come to yoga seeking relief. Relief from pain, from restlessness, from uncertainty. And sometimes we find it. But over time, what we discover is more lasting than relief. We discover presence. We discover steadiness. We discover a kind of joy that doesn’t have to shout. It only has to be.

So we practice. Not to get rid of pain, but to know it. To meet it with clarity and care. And in that meeting, we find something remarkable: joy is still possible.

It is a joy that knows sorrow. A happiness that is not threatened by difficulty. This is the depth of saumanasya. Saumanasya is defined by Patañjali as cheerfulness—it could also be translated as “mental clarity,” “gentle gladness,” or even “spiritual contentment.” But this is not about putting on a smile or chasing a feeling. It’s the natural radiance of a mind that has become unentangled.

In Pāli, the same word appears as saumanassa, and it’s spoken of as a kind of mental vedanā—a feeling tone that arises not from external stimulation, but from deep, internal stillness.

It’s not the kind of joy that explodes in celebration or depends on everything going our way. It’s the joy that arises when the striving quiets down. When the noise fades. When the heart is unburdened.

And perhaps most beautifully, it’s a joy that does not replace suffering, but includes it.
