Try these drills to build strength, flexibility, and mobility in your shoulders. Accessing the full range of motion with control and awareness, and external rotation helps deepen your backbends. Flexibility is intimately connected to accessing the upper back.

Use a block behind the stone on to provide feedback as you activate the back muscles and extend the shoulders over overhead.

Work with an elevated puppy pose to add weight and strength to the range of motion in external rotation.

Hold a block above your head while practicing the range of motion needed to drop back. Holding the block will add just enough weight to create challenge and build strength.

Yoga is not only the movement of body and breath, but the gentle art of introspection. Each time we step onto the mat, we make a quiet decision in the heart to turn inward, to listen, to feel. In the stillness between breaths and the spaces within each posture, we meet ourselves honestly. To truly experience our doubts, our longings, our strength, and our tenderness is the inner work of practice.

Introspection in yoga is not a side path; it is the path itself. When we turn inward, the mirror of practice reveals more than muscle and bone. Through inner listening we tune into the hidden currents of thought, the subtle tides of feeling, the quiet truths that lie beneath the noise of the world. To walk the yogic path is to pause and listen, again and again, to what arises within.

This turning inward is not escape, but intimacy. To practice is to trace the river of the self back toward its source, where silence opens into clarity and awareness shines. Introspection is the hidden thread that runs through the journey of yoga, guiding us not away from life, but deeper into its truth.

I never thought I would become a yoga teacher. I w

I never thought I would become a yoga teacher. I was in graduate school at NYU, pursuing a degree in the social sciences and working as a freelance journalist, trying to figure out what direction my life would take.

But everything shifted after yoga came into my life. Within my first year of practicing Ashtanga, I traveled to India for two months. I met Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois in Mysore, and the experience changed me completely.

When I returned to New York, people immediately noticed. Friends said I looked different, lighter, more alive. They asked what I had done that summer. I told them about my journey to India and my practice. Without even realizing it, I had started sharing yoga, not because I set out to, but because the practice had transformed me so deeply that it overflowed into my life.

This is how my path as a yoga teacher began. Not from a plan, not from a career track, but from following the spark of transformation. That spark eventually grew into my livelihood and into a calling that allowed me to build a purpose-driven career in yoga.
