There’s a part of the practice that no one sees.

It’s not in the shape of the pose or the sequence of breath. It’s in the quiet decision to keep going. It’s in the tremble of effort, the softness after the struggle, the stillness that comes when you finally stop running from yourself.

Some days, the mat feels like home and every breath is inspired. Other days, it takes effort just to begin. But I’ve learned that practice isn’t about how I feel—it’s about the choice to return, especially when it’s difficult.

In the Yoga Sūtras, this is called abhyāsa—the steady, devoted repetition of practice over time. From the Sanskrit root √bhās, meaning “to dwell upon” or “to return again and again,” abhyāsa is more than discipline—it’s a kind of ritual devotion. It’s how the soul remembers itself through movement, breath, and stillness.

The real yoga begins the moment you want to quit—but don’t.

That moment changes you.
That moment is the practice.

Putting your leg behind your head isn’t really the point.

Yes, it takes a massive range of motion in the hips, years of practice, and a willingness to meet discomfort. But in yoga, the posture is never the destination — it’s the path inward.

When we approach a shape like Eka Pāda Śīrṣāsana, the question isn’t “Can I do it?” but “What is it teaching me?”

Maybe it’s revealing resistance.
Maybe it’s calling for surrender.
Maybe it’s asking for patience, strength, or deep listening.

Some bodies may never do this posture. That doesn’t make the practice any less valuable. In fact, the effort to try — the intention behind the action — often teaches more than the pose itself ever could.

If you’re naturally flexible, the lesson might be strength and stability. If it’s a struggle, the practice might be humility and compassion. Either way, the posture becomes a mirror. And yoga begins when we look honestly into that reflection.

So no — it’s not about getting your leg behind your head.

It’s about what you discover along the way.

Work strength and flexibility to deepen your backbone. Use these drills to access spinal extension.

1. Elevate the body on blocks and upholster. This gets more space for the spine to release by allowing gravity to assist with the extension.

2. Place upholster like a wedge in the lower portion of the abdomen. Use this extra height and support to engage the back muscles and the posterior chain.

3. Tie yourself up in a strap and then use a push pull mechanism to bring the feet closer to the head.

4. Put it all together. Engage the back muscles to articulate a deeper, spinal extension. Don’t be fooled into trying to bring the feet to the head. Instead, keep bending the back and folding into the joints of the spine.

To walk the path of yoga is not merely to accumula

To walk the path of yoga is not merely to accumulate techniques or memorize sequences. It is to step into a living current, a stream of wisdom that flows across generations—carried not by texts alone, but through breath, presence, and the quiet fire of transformation. In Sanskrit, this sacred flow is known as paramparā—the unbroken succession of teachings passed from teacher to student, from heart to heart.

Lineage is a thread woven from devotion and direct experience—a continuity that becomes real only when we step into it with sincerity. We do not own this stream; we are invited to participate in its unfolding.

As my teacher often said:

“Practice, and all is coming.”

But what is it that comes? Not success. Not mastery. Not applause.

What comes is presence—the subtle art of being fully here.
What comes is inner strength—the quiet resilience born from showing up, breath after breath.

What comes is the realization that you are part of something ancient and alive, and that the sacred lives through you now.

To walk this path is to become a flame-bearer in the dark—tending the light passed down by those who came before, keeping it alive through your own devotion. The lineage continues not because we preserve it in glass, but because we breathe life into it, again and again.

The tradition lives because we live it.
It endures because we bow our head, place our hands on the mat, and begin.

This is the work.
This is the way.
This is the living lineage.
