Backbending is not only about flexibility, but about the integration of breath, body, and mind. It asks for strength, awareness, and a willingness to move with care rather than force.

There can be a tendency to focus on the depth of the shape, but what matters more is how the posture is built. The work begins from within, engaging the muscles of the back, creating support before seeking expansion.

When approached with patience, backbending becomes a process of opening gradually and safely. Each step prepares the body for what follows, allowing the posture to unfold with stability and ease.

This is where trust is developed, not by pushing further, but by listening more closely.

This posture is often passed over in the eagerness to move on.

We look for something deeper, something more complex, something that feels like progress. But what if the foundation already contains everything?

Utthita Pārśvakoṇāsana asks us to stay.

To root through the legs. To expand through the side body. To organize the structure of the posture from the inside rather than forcing the shape from the outside.

The standing sequence is not something we move through on the way to the “real” practice. It is the practice. It teaches us how to distribute effort, how to remain steady within expansion, and how to build strength without collapse.

We explore the balance between strength and flexibility.

Upavistha Konasana is not about how far you can go, but how you move within the space you have. It asks for a steady and balanced approach, where effort is guided by awareness rather than force.

There can be a tendency to push, to try to pull yourself deeper into the posture. But this is not the path here. Instead, the work unfolds gradually, through patience and consistency.

The body organizes itself from the foundation. The hips root back, the spine lengthens forward, and the movement comes from a place of integration rather than strain.

Each stage builds upon the last. What begins as a simple forward fold becomes a deeper expression of connection between strength, flexibility, and breath.
