What looks like flexibility is often strength. What looks like strength is often flexibility. Understanding the hidden nature of each asana helps better inform technique in the practice.

Putting both legs behind the head focuses on building strength to support flexibility more than it does on developing flexibility. While there is absolutely a base level of external rotation required, most students who struggle with this asana face a test of strength. Dwi Pada Sirsasana demands that the upper body be strong enough to carry the weight of the legs, the shoulders be strong enough to push back against the calves and the lower spine be strong enough to hold the weight of the body in flexion.

Tips—

1. Snuggle the calf muscles behind the shoulders when putting the legs behind the head.

2. Let the feet do the work. Once the second foot touches the first, use the activation of the feet to guide them around each other.

3. Lock the head and shoulders in place. Once the first foot is behind the head, don’t change the head position. Keep actively pressing back into the foot or shinbone throughout the entire asana.

4. Don’t get assisted in this pose every day. If you’re relying on your teacher to put the legs behind your head and stretch you, then you might be missing the lesson of the struggle.

After teaching, I love to take a walk. A quiet hike in nature feels like a true blessing, but even a stroll through the city can help me reset. It’s a simple ritual that brings me back to myself.

What’s your go-to way to wind down after teaching?

Being a yoga teacher means walking two paths at once: the inner path of personal practice, and the outer path of sharing that journey with others. To stay inspired, we have to keep studying, practicing, and filling our own cups — again and again.

Try these block drills to help open the shoulders

Try these block drills to help open the shoulders and the spine for Kapotasana. Everyone seemed to like the strap drills I posted last week, what do you think about these block drills?

Use the block to support the upper back and work progressively. First stack two blocks and place them behind the shoulder blades. Hold a strap to keep the shoulders active in the external rotation pattern. Sink the hips and reach the arms overhead. If this worked well, turn the top block to a higher position and repeat. Increase the demand on the shoulders by dropping the strap, bending the elbows and holding onto the block.

Place the block under the sacrum and extend the legs. Wait for the hips to open. Then, fold the legs around the block and settle the knees on the ground. Reach the hands over the head, press the hips forward and gently walk toward the feet. Use the block between the feet to prevent the feet from sliding together as you deepen the grip.

We do not step onto the mat in pursuit of perfection. We come to practice so we may learn—and learning, by its nature, requires that we fail, sometimes over and over again. As students, this is humbling. As teachers, the path often feels even steeper, the stakes somehow higher. But the journey remains the same: to return, again and again, with sincerity.

Over the years, I’ve encountered criticism—sometimes subtle, sometimes sharp. I’ve been judged for what I wear (or don’t), for the color of my hair, the sound of my voice, my makeup, my smile, my spirit. Some of it came straight to my face. Much of it hid behind the veil of online anonymity. And some filtered through in whispers, just out of reach but still stinging.

Like many of you, I’ve wandered, grasped, stumbled, searched. I haven’t “arrived” anywhere. There is no final destination in this practice—only the next breath, the next step, the next layer to soften into. If there is anything enduring in me, it’s not perfection, but persistence. I kept showing up. And I did so in the presence of teachers who saw something deep and true in me, and who tended to those seeds—of peace, of love, of insight—with great care.

Now, in their absence, it feels like both an honor and a responsibility to pass on whatever nourishment I’ve received to those who choose to practice with me.

Who I am today—as a human being, as a practitioner, and as a teacher—is the result of years of effort, of listening, of failing, and of learning. If you see peace in my eyes, know that it arose through chaos. If you hear wisdom in my words, know it was born of confusion. If you feel love in my presence, understand that I had to remember the way back to my own heart.

Yoga, in the end, is not about becoming someone else. It’s about uncovering who we’ve always been—through the fire, the tears, the laughter, and the stillness.
