Discipline shows up when inspiration doesn’t.

This morning, in a tight hotel room, I rolled out my mat before a long travel day. It wasn’t ideal, but I showed up.

It’s on days like this that my commitment is tested—to do the practice I can, whenever and however I can.

Not every session is filled with inspiration. Sometimes it’s just about showing up, placing the mat down, and moving through it. There are stretches of time when the spark feels bright, fueled by devotion and clarity. And then there are the other times—when the flame is faint, when lighting it feels like work. Yet even then, especially then, it takes strength and determination to keep going.

If we wait only for the easy days, when everything flows, we miss the deeper purpose of daily practice. True devotion is revealed not in perfection, but in persistence. The practice isn’t about mastering the poses—or even ourselves. It’s about meeting whatever arises, with honesty and grace. Even when it feels like a storm, even when the mind resists, the mat remains a mirror. The process is rarely easy, but always worth it.

Tristhāna is the foundation of Ashtanga Yoga. It means “three places of attention,” and it forms the method that turns physical postures into a spiritual practice. These three points—āsana, breath, and gaze—are not arbitrary. They’re precise tools of transformation that work together to purify body, nervous system, and mind.

Asana creates a stable, grounded form. Through repetition and refinement, it builds discipline, strength, and flexibility. But more importantly, asana becomes a container for self-study. The breath—deep, steady, and controlled—flows continuously throughout the practice. Based in ujjayi, the breath is an embodied, felt and heard, anchoring awareness. This rhythmic breathing soothes the nervous system, supports vagal tone, and gradually trains the mind to stay present. Then there’s dṛṣṭi, the gaze. It may seem subtle, even optional, but it’s essential. The eyes have a direct connection to the mind. A wandering gaze reflects a scattered mind. But when the gaze is intentional—steady and soft—it signals the whole system to stay focused. Over time, the three together train the senses to turn inward (pratyāhāra), which is the beginning of true meditation.

Tristhāna works because it engages body, breath, and mind simultaneously. It demands presence, moment by moment. And, through that steady attention, the fluctuations of the mind begin to settle. We don’t need to seek anything outside ourselves. All we have to do is keep returning to the three points of practice. Again and again. That’s the method.

There’s a subtle illusion that if we just read lots of books, watch videos, try harder, and study enough, we will arrive at wisdom and success. But the ancient teachings of yoga offer a stark reminder: true knowledge does not live in words or intellect alone—it becomes real only through practice. Study and seeking without deep faith, embodied sincerity and committed practice cannot reveal the essence of yoga.

Transcendent knowing cannot be reached through study alone; it must be lived, practiced, and realized. “One may read all the scriptures and study all the Vedas,” the Amṛtabindu Upaniṣad says, “but if one does not abide in yoga, all that effort is fruitless.” This is a powerful message for all of us today—especially those who, like me, have immersed ourselves in yogic texts, philosophy, and discourse.

This is not to dismiss the value of study—it’s showing us its limits. Words point the way, but practice is the path. This resonates deeply in our time, when yoga can so easily become performance or information. The real work of yoga begins when we put down the book, roll out the mat, and meet ourselves in the fire of direct experience. In those moments of breath, sweat, stillness, and silence, the teachings awaken. Not as ideas—but as truth lived through the body, mind, and heart.

As teachers and students, we’re called not just to repeat the teachings, but to become the teachings. Wisdom isn’t something we accumulate. It’s something we dissolve into. And the only way to do that is to practice—again and again—until knowledge is no longer something we hold, but something we are.

We are all beginners on the spiritual path. No mat

We are all beginners on the spiritual path. No matter how long we’ve been practicing, none of us has reached the still summit of the sages. We are each engaged in the necessary work of purification—disciplining the body, steadying the breath, refining the mind. These efforts are the foundation from which subtler practices, like meditation, can truly take root.

There are no shortcuts on the path of yoga. No elevator to samādhi. The journey unfolds step by step, breath by breath. Only when the inner ground is made firm through sustained effort can the deeper work of yoga truly begin.

In the Bhagavad Gītā, Krishna speaks of the ārurukṣu—the one who longs to climb, who aspires to rise into the state of yoga.

ārurukṣu (आरुरुक्षु) comes from the root √ruh, meaning “to ascend,” and speaks to the yearning that ignites the journey.

To be an ārurukṣu is not a sign of immaturity—it is a sacred stage. It means we’ve heard the call. We’ve turned toward the practice with sincerity. The path of yoga is nothing less than the evolution of consciousness: from striving to stillness, from desire to devotion, from the yearning to rise (ārurukṣu) to the one who has become firmly established in the state of yoga (yogārūḍha).
