Yoga cannot be measured by the shapes we make with

Yoga cannot be measured by the shapes we make with our bodies. It is possible to perform gravity-defying floats, deep backbends, handstands and advanced postures without necessarily transforming the mind and heart. It is also possible for the physical practice to become part of a profound inner transformation, just as it is possible to transform the heart and mind without ever putting your leg behind your head.

My teacher used to say that what impressed him wasn’t the poses we could do, the handstands, backbends, lifts or advanced series. What impressed him was something much simpler: kindness.

Physical accomplishment is visible, while the transformation of character is much harder to see. A handstand can be photographed and a deep backbend can be demonstrated, but patience does not photograph so easily. Neither do generosity, forgiveness, humility, compassion or the ability to celebrate someone else’s happiness without feeling diminished by it. These qualities reveal themselves gradually through the choices we make, especially when there is no audience and no reward for choosing what is good.

After all the hours on the mat, all the effort, all the successes and failures, are we more patient, generous and compassionate? Can we celebrate the happiness of others? Can we tell the truth without cruelty and hold boundaries without hatred? Are we a little kinder?

If the answer is yes, then the practice is working.

There is a point in practice where the idea of pro

There is a point in practice where the idea of progress begins to change.

At first, it can be easy to measure growth through form. A deeper backbend. A stronger jump through. A new posture. More control. More range. More complexity.

But over time, I have come to understand the practice differently. In this conversation, @timfeldmannyoga and I explore how the trajectory of asana is not always upward. It can become an inward spiral.

The external form may change, or it may not. The real evolution can be in the quality of attention, the depth of awareness, the willingness to observe more closely, and the way we meet ourselves each time we step onto the mat.

That inward turning is where the practice becomes less about achieving a particular shape and more about understanding what is actually happening within.

Pasāsana is the first posture of Ashtanga Yoga’s I

Pasāsana is the first posture of Ashtanga Yoga’s Intermediate Series, and from the very beginning, it asks us to approach Second Series differently.

The posture begins with the foundation of the squat, requiring mobility through the ankles, knees, and hips before we even begin to think about the twist or the bind. From there, the work becomes less about forcing the final shape and more about creating space, organizing the body, and building the posture gradually.

Pasāsana is more than the first pose of Second Series. It is a threshold into a new stage of practice, one that asks for patience, curiosity, consistency, and a willingness to work intelligently with where we are.

Someone trying to be helpful told me recently that

Someone trying to be helpful told me recently that maybe I should try smiling less and playing it cool more often. They suggested that perhaps more people would like me if I did, and maybe I would be less divisive.

While I know the advice was offered with the intention of being helpful, I don’t plan on taking it.

Imagine if I took great pains to carefully craft an image of someone who plays it super cool, who is always composed and slightly aloof. What would happen when people actually met me and discovered that I am smiley and happy, that I love to laugh, and that I really don’t care very much about playing it cool?

What I do care about is being kind.

There is no sense in cultivating some too-cool persona image if the heart underneath it is cold or cruel. I actually think it is kind of chic to carry a spirit of hospitality in your heart toward everyone who shares the path of yoga. I would rather make people feel welcome than impress them with how little I seem to care.

At some point, I gave up trying to change myself so that other people would like me. That does not mean I have given up on growth. I still want to learn. I still want to listen when criticism is constructive, recognize my mistakes, apologize when necessary, and become a better person. But growth and self-erasure are not the same thing. I don’t want to spend my life carefully editing my personality into something I imagine might be more acceptable to other people.

Peace, and the lack thereof, ultimately comes from within. Perhaps part of that peace is learning to inhabit ourselves a little more fully, without constantly wondering whether we should smile less, laugh less, care less, or become someone else in order to be liked.

So I think I’ll keep smiling.
