Yoga does not end when the āsana practice is over.

Yoga does not end when the āsana practice is over. In many ways, it is just beginning. We cultivate strength so that we may hold peace as a living prayer, even, and especially, in times of chaos and uncertainty.

The practice traditionally closes with the ritual chanting of Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ, repeated three times in reference to the tāpa-traya, the three kinds of suffering. The first invocation is for peace within, a quieting of inner turbulence, a settling of the mind and heart. The second is for peace in the external world, a sincere wish for harmony among all beings, a hope that understanding may prevail over conflict. The third is for peace in the unseen, cosmic realm, where the subtle currents of life move beyond personal control.

Ending the practice with this chant reminds us that peace begins within, radiates outward, and ultimately rests in the vastness that holds us all.

Insight alone does not liberate. A person may understand the philosophical architecture of nonduality, feel moved by the declaration that the Self is not separate from ultimate reality, and even experience fleeting moments in which the mind falls silent and awareness feels luminous and expansive, yet still discover that under stress the old reflexes return with startling force.

We may leave the mat in a state of stillness and, hours later, react sharply to criticism. We may speak eloquently about compassion and yet feel envy rise when another practitioner advances more quickly. We may taste spacious awareness in meditation and still find the body tightening in traffic or the mind rehearsing grievances before sleep. These reversals do not invalidate insight, they reveal its fragility.

Yoga refuses to confuse the clarity of an idea with the transformation of a life. It does not dismiss insight, but it asks how a moment of recognition becomes stable, embodied, and trustworthy when conditions are no longer ideal. A glimpse is not yet a baseline. The nervous system has not been re-patterned simply because awareness briefly opened. The tradition’s answer is not further speculation but disciplined participation. Insight must be trained into reliability. That training is called practice.

Leaving this short time in Mysore with the same inspiration as always, that is, to keep practicing.

Sādhanā, from the root √sādh, to accomplish or bri

Sādhanā, from the root √sādh, to accomplish or bring into alignment, is the steady reshaping of the instrument of perception. It is not acquisition but rectification. It does not ask what can be gained, but what must be relinquished for clarity to stabilize. Through sādhanā, intention becomes embodied.

At first, practice feels like routine. It structures the day. It disciplines the body. Yet repetition alone does not transform. Routine becomes ritual when inhabited with intention. The outer action remains the same, but the inner orientation shifts. Breath becomes offering rather than count. Posture becomes inquiry rather than achievement. Bhāvanā, the cultivated disposition of mind, determines whether repetition refines perception or merely reinforces identity.

Over years, sādhanā alters the texture of daily life. Reaction slows. The interval between impulse and response widens. The practitioner discovers that discipline is less about intensity and more about fidelity. What began as method matures into relationship.
