Fail at the end, albeit a mild one.

SharathJi used to say not to put too much lotion, cream or oil on or else the body would be too slippery. Bali massages are amazing for everything except self-catching. After all the lotion and oil, I just couldn’t find the grip on one side and my fingers kept sliding. The rain and extra humidity didn’t help much either. But it’s all good, it’s practice not performance. And this one is always better with an assist, don’t you think?

This whole process took about a minute and a half. This video is sped up 5x.

Longing and devotion remind us that the relationship between teacher and student transcends time and space. Even when physically distant, the presence of our teachers lingers within us, shaping our practice and illuminating our path. Their grace is not just in their words or adjustments but in the space they hold for transformation. True kṛpā does not fade with absence; it remains as an inner refuge, a whisper to the soul, a steady current carrying us forward.

The Sanskrit word for grace, “kṛpā”, is derived from the root kṛp, which means “to show compassion, or to bestow kindness.”

The essence of kṛpā is both divine grace and as the guiding force of a teacher’s wisdom. The last line of the Guru Stotram, mokṣa-mūlaṁ guru-kṛpā, affirms that liberation begins with the Guru’s grace. Kṛpā represents a divine flow of compassion, blessings, and support. Grace from the guru or Grace from God removes obstacles on the path. In Ashtanga Yoga, kṛpā can be seen in the guidance of the teacher and the transformative power of the practice itself—grace flows when we surrender to the process.

I miss my teachers and the shelter that their grace provided and yet I still feel their presence in my heart.

If you’re flapping your butterfly wings but feel

If you’re flapping your butterfly wings but feel stuck in Baddha Konasana, try this.

Fold up a thick blanket and sit on it. This will elevate the pelvis, change the access point to the hips and encourage the pelvis to pivot as you bend forward. Increasing the range of motion in the hips and pelvis makes external rotation more accessible.

If you have a friend or yoga teacher, they can apply gentle pressure to the legs and help release the inner thighs and hips. Over time the butterfly wings of the legs will release, unfold and open.

Sometimes, no matter our intention, no matter h

Sometimes, no matter our intention, no matter how hard we try, some acts of unintentional harm will be done.

Yesterday I looked underneath my shoe and found the dead body of a caterpillar. While filming this video a little caterpillar got caught under my hand as I changed position. I’m sorry to say it didn’t survive the encounter.

While it certainly was not my intention to harm these little beings, my actions nevertheless did. Because of me, there will be two less butterflies in the world. I felt very sad about the impact of these actions.

How do we navigate a world where no matter what we do, some harm will always be done? Does intent mitigate the impact of harm once it’s done? What about behavior changes?

No matter what happens, I will always come back to the practice because this where the mirror shines most clearly.
