When I first began practicing yoga, the idea of feeling comfortable in a handstand seemed like an impossibility. In fact, I couldn’t even approach a simple inversion without tumbling or falling out—headstands were my first major hurdle, and I struggled with them endlessly. It took years of patience, countless failures, and a commitment to keep going. But over time, something shifted. Slowly, through practice and a willingness to embrace failure, I found myself growing stronger, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

Yoga is an invitation to push beyond our perceived limits. No matter where you are in your practice, whether you’re just starting or have been on this path for years, the simple act of showing up on the mat each day makes you stronger. It’s not about whether you can nail a handstand or master every advanced pose. In truth, not everyone will be able to do all the powerful asanas, and that’s okay. The true essence of yoga isn’t about achieving a perfect pose; it’s about the effort—the willingness to try and keep going even when it feels impossible.

Yoga encourages us to move beyond the confines of what comes easily. It challenges us to explore the outer edges of our potential, stretching not just our bodies, but our minds and our hearts. The journey isn’t about doing every pose perfectly; it’s about embracing the lessons hidden within the process itself. Sometimes, the lesson of a pose isn’t in achieving it, but in understanding its deeper meaning. And at times, when we’ve integrated that wisdom, the physical form may drop away entirely, revealing a deeper truth.

Of course, there are those rare moments when, after years of consistent practice and patience, the seemingly impossible becomes possible. But even in those moments, it’s not about the achievement—it’s about the growth we experience along the way.

So wherever you are on your yoga journey, whether you’re struggling with an inversion or mastering a new challenge, remember this: keep practicing.

Why yoga? Anyone who has practiced for a decade, two decades, or even a lifetime knows that the answer to this question is anything but simple—or perhaps so simple that words fail to capture it.

Some truths can only be understood through embodied knowledge, a form of wisdom that arises not from intellectual effort but from deep receptivity. Yoga is a path of insight, not just the accumulation of facts or information, though it does not reject them. It is a path of Vijñāna—a deeper knowing, an awakened consciousness, a means of direct realization.

There are realms beyond what the mind can grasp, mysteries that logic cannot solve. But what the mind cannot know, the spirit can perceive, and the soul can experience.

This is why lifelong practitioners return to their mats, day after day, year after year. All who have touched this special knowledge—not of the intellect, but of the soul—are called them back, again and again, to what was once glimpsed in moments of deep practice.

To deepen your forward fold, engage the quadriceps, draw the lower ribs in and send the pelvis slightly forward. Finding this weight distribution will build strength and flexibility.

Working your forward fold this way helps prepare the body for other poses like inversions and external hip rotations. Deepening the first standing can make all the difference and the practice.

It takes years of practice to find the pivot inside the hip joints, release the hamstrings and the back and access this depth of flexibility.

This short tutorial was filmed during our two week retreat in Mallorca @balearicretreats We love this island in the Mediterranean and look forward to spending two weeks there immersed in Ashtanga Yoga and we hope you’ll join us.

Mysore has always been my yoga home, a place where I’ve come to be a students and refill my cup. Change was inevitable this time. And yet, I can feel that there is nourishment here, in our community, in the memory of my teachers who lived their lives here.

The Mysore magic is still alive, in all our hearts.

It’s been hard for me to put into words how I’ve felt over the last few days. The mixture of emotions feels like a rollercoaster ride.

For now, I’m here practicing, as I always have been, and grateful for each moment on the mat.
