Yoga invites us into clarity, not just flexibility.

Through practice, movement becomes inquiry and effort becomes listening.

In this conversation with Dr. Raj Balkaran, we explore how mythology functions as a living teaching within the yogic tradition. The stories behind the poses are not decorative. They point toward the inner work of yoga, the refinement of perception, the softening of ego, and the cultivation of wisdom.

Classical yoga teaches that the primary obstacle is not something outside of us, but ignorance within. When ignorance begins to lift, clarity naturally follows. In this way, even difficulty becomes instructive. What challenges us can also guide us, shaping how we act, choose, and relate.

Practice is not measured by how far we stretch or how advanced a posture appears. It is revealed in how we meet life with steadiness, humility, and care. This is where yoga moves beyond technique and becomes a lifelong inward journey, carried both on and off the mat.

Use a chair to work strength, alignment, and flexibility in this variation of Vishwamitrasana. Then, try without the support and see if you can find the same line.

There’s a question about the name of this asana that I think only Krishnamacharya, my teacher’s teacher, could answer. Students of Pattabhi Jois call this pose Vasisthasana and students of Iyengar and later students of Krishnamacharya call this pose Vishwamitrasana. I’ve always figured that if you integarte both of these two poses in your practice, the energy of both sages will flow through you. So at that point, maybe it doesn’t matter. But, what do you think? Who got it right?
