All the knowledge of yoga is like a vast and immeasurable ocean—timeless, deep, and flowing beyond the limits of any one life or mind. As seekers, we often find ourselves standing at its edge, reaching into its depths, grasping for understanding. Yet, like water slipping through our fingers, the more we try to possess this knowledge, the more it eludes us. Grasping tightly, we find only emptiness. So what are we to do?

Rather than clutch at the ocean, we can become like vessels—empty, open, and ready to receive. A pot cannot hold water if it is already full. In the same way, we must empty ourselves of preconceptions, pride, and attachment in order to receive even a drop of the wisdom that yoga offers. And even then, one vessel can only carry so much. But if many vessels are linked together—like pots arranged in a line, or beads strung on a thread—then more of this sacred water can be carried and shared.

This is the spirit of paramparā.

The Sanskrit word paramparā (परम्परा) is derived from param, meaning “beyond” or “supreme,” and parā, which implies “that which comes next” or “a succession.” Literally, it means “an uninterrupted series” or “one after another.” In the yogic tradition, paramparā refers to the unbroken transmission of wisdom from teacher to student—a living lineage in which knowledge is not merely transferred but infused with direct experience, grace, and realization.

Lineage is not just about preserving the past—it is about entering into relationship: student with teacher, teacher with their teacher, and so on, all the way back to the source. In this chain, we become more than individuals—we become conduits of a living wisdom, each of us playing our part in keeping the current flowing. In this way, lineage is not a limitation, but a form of liberation—freeing us from the illusion that we must carry this alone.

Sometimes Kapotasana can feel like you’re all tied up, so why not embrace it and tie yourself up? All kidding aside, try these strap drills to build strength and flexibility for deeper backbends and a more fluid entry to Kapotasana.

1. Sit on a strap in a kneeling position. Grab the strap over your head and pull on it. Pop the chest forward, arch the back and externally rotate the shoulders.

2. Keep the strap hooked under the feet and let it slide over the shoulders. Pull on the strap as you send the pelvis forward. Repeat until the head drops comfortably back.

3. Use the strap like two ropes and pull on the ropes while pushing the hips forward and the feet down. Use this push-pull mechanism to deepen and strength your backbends.

4. Apply the technique without the strap and see if the body and mind can recall the same neuromuscular activation.

Everything we experience is filtered through the l

Everything we experience is filtered through the lens of who we are. Even the most sacred teachings—those luminous gems passed down through time—must pass through the gateway of our minds before they can take root in the heart. The classical path of yoga teaches that in order to truly receive such wisdom, the mind must be prepared. It must be made steady, clear, and pure.

In the Bhagavad Gītā, the Sanskrit words śuddhabhāva and śuddhi—purity of being and clarity of mind—appear as essential conditions for receiving jñāna, true knowledge. The ancient texts suggest that a mind shaped by faith, steadied by self-restraint, and softened by devotion becomes a vessel ready to hold the nectar of wisdom. This is the mind of sudhīḥ—one of refined intellect, who can truly drink the milk of the Gītā, as the old chant says.

As yoga practitioners, this is our invitation: to train the mind with every tool available to us. Asana practice, when done with presence, discipline, and humility, becomes one such tool. Each breath steadies the senses. Each posture reveals the subtle fluctuations of the mind. Over time, the physical practice becomes a mirror, showing us where we cling, where we resist, and where we can let go.

The fruits of wisdom don’t arrive through force. They ripen slowly, in the soil of a purified heart and a concentrated mind. And so the instruction is simple, though not always easy: keep practicing. Practice to purify. Practice to concentrate. Practice so that, when the teachings finally reach you, you are ready to receive them.
