I never thought I would become a yoga teacher. I was in graduate school at NYU, pursuing a degree in the social sciences and working as a freelance journalist, trying to figure out what direction my life would take.

But everything shifted after yoga came into my life. Within my first year of practicing Ashtanga, I traveled to India for two months. I met Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois in Mysore, and the experience changed me completely.

When I returned to New York, people immediately noticed. Friends said I looked different, lighter, more alive. They asked what I had done that summer. I told them about my journey to India and my practice. Without even realizing it, I had started sharing yoga, not because I set out to, but because the practice had transformed me so deeply that it overflowed into my life.

This is how my path as a yoga teacher began. Not from a plan, not from a career track, but from following the spark of transformation. That spark eventually grew into my livelihood and into a calling that allowed me to build a purpose-driven career in yoga.

The geometry of yoga is never accidental. Shapes like Triangle and Revolved Triangle are not just physical forms — they are living symbols.

When you step into Utthita Trikoṇāsana, you embody the strength and clarity of the upward-pointing triangle, the symbol of fire and aspiration. In Parivr̥tta Trikoṇāsana, that fire turns, transforms, and reveals what was hidden. One pose is rooted and steady; the other is dynamic and revolutionary. Together, they mirror the eternal balance of Śiva and Śakti, steadiness and transformation.

These postures carry deep history. They did not appear in the medieval haṭha texts but arose later in Mysore under the guidance of Krishnamacharya, and from there spread around the world through the work of B.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois. Each tradition interprets them differently, but the essence remains the same: a practice that strengthens the body, awakens the breath, and clears the channels of perception.

To practice Triangle is to enter sacred geometry. To revolve it is to embrace transformation. Together, they invite us into steadiness amidst change, clarity amidst movement, and the fire of yoga that both grounds and transforms.

Try these drills to work on your chinstand.

Place the shoulders onto two yoga blocks and send the chin slightly forward. Lift one leg up and when you feel stable press all the way up with both legs. Engage the back muscles and shift forward and back to articulate the movement in the spinal axis.

Use a big Physioball to balance the body and support the forward direction of the chest and upper back. Extend the shoulders forward and when the feet get close enough to the head, reach the hands up to hold onto the toes, the feet or the ankles.

Finally try with a straight lift. Keep the same activation as in all the proceeding drills. Don’t rush or force.

When I first tried Utplutiḥ, it felt utterly impossible. I pressed with all my strength and nothing moved. The secret, I later learned, wasn’t more force — it was containment.

Hands just forward of the hips. Tailbone tucked. Core sealed tight. Chin soft. Shoulders pressing down, hips drifting back and up, ribs knitting toward the pelvis. From this inward coil, the body suddenly lifts, light as flame.

Utplutiḥ isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about gathering energy inward until it springs beyond gravity.
